Chemistry of Combustion

Usually, Carbon dioxide gas and water are obtained by the combustion of hydrocarbons. Some examples are cited below:

  • CH4 + 1/2O2 = CH3OH
  • CH3OH + 1/2O2 = HCHO*+H2O
  • HCHO = CO+H2
  • H2+1/2O2=H2O
  • CO+1/2O2=CO2

Also known by the name formaldehyde, if it hits the cold wall, the process will stop and its smell can be easily observed in the poor heat exchanger designs.

Ratio of Air or Gas

  • stoichiometric ratio = 1 if air is just adequate for combustion
  • ?> 1 if air is excess
  •  < 1 if gas is excess

Gas Combustion

The mentioned machine is designed with safety operations because of which it is highly demanded in the market. Each unit is designed is only designed by keeping in mind the type of gas used which will eventually lead to the safer environment. A system designed for propane cannot be used by Butane because its self ignition temperature is 450 degree Celsius that can flashback and cause explosion if used with natural gas or propane.

Radiant / Blue Flame Modes

The flow of premix leads up to the heat intensity of 100- 500 kw/m2. Based upon this, the process of the combustion is conducted within the surface of the burner itself. This heats up and glow the surface while transferring the heat in the radiant form and this process is known as infrared mode. However, the process of radiation occurs at the temperature of 1050 degree Celsius. If the quantity of premix is increased, nitrogen is flown into excess, resulting in the cooling down of burner. When the process of combustion is carried outside the burner, then the mode is called as blue flame mode. But, the intensity of the flame can be high as 20 MW/m2. The main thing that is to be observed is that in both the cases, flue gases are released in the air.

For radiant operation, ? = 1.05 to 1.1
For blue flame mode, ? = 1.1 to 1.2

Efficiencies in Radiant mode

Higher amount of combustion occurs at lower level of intensities at the surface. The efficiency of the radiant is about 55 to 60% high at 125 KW/m2 and below 100 KW/m2, the flame can't sustain. However, this efficiency can be easily increased at any  position with the addition of a grid at the front.
